Kuala Lumpur Trip
By Angus Cheng
Last Monday I went hiking and hung out with my friend Toby. He said he was going to Kuala Lumpur for a few days and asked me to join. I had a little think about it and decided yes I would go. The next day I booked a flight to be in KL Wednesday morning to Saturday night.
Wednesday
The flight was pretty good, I worked on Busty Barrister until I ran out of batteries then I read Number Go Up on my Kindle. I worked in crypto for a year, and somehow I’ve kept up to date with it without trying, because of this I think I knew 90% of what goes on in Number Go Up. Still it was a good read.
I got to Kuala Lumpur, got out of the airport and booked a GrabTaxi straight to the AirBnb. When I got to the apartment I noticed it was full of rubbish. The host then messaged me and said “Oh the WiFi doesn’t work, but I can give you a late checkout of 1 PM.” Annoying. Then I went to take a shower but the towels were wet. Gross. I messaged the host telling them the problems they asked me for a photo but I couldn’t be bothered.
I went into the new apartment and it was a lot nicer. Nice!
At this time, Toby was playing badminton and Boon was working from a coffee shop. I got changed and took a GrabTaxi down to the coffee shop. It was a long drive because of the traffic. I hung out with Boon drank some coffee and worked on Busty Barrister. I might have done some work on BankStatementConverter as well but I do not recall.
I signed up for two open mics that night. The first was at Simply Comedy at 7:00 PM and the second was at KL Comedy Club at 7:30 PM. Boon and I left the coffee shop at 6 PM. The traffic was really bad because of a Coldplay concert. We got to Simply Comedy at 7:30 PM half an hour late. I walked in and it was totally empty. I thought I had missed it but actually they decided to start an hour late because of the Coldplay concert. They knew Coldplay would mess with Kuala Lumpur’s traffic.
I think there were 5 comics and 1 audience member at Simply Comedy. Boon was a great audience member, he laughed at every joke. My set went okay, not amazing. We watched the rest of the comics then drove over to KL Comedy Club. Toby, Jess and Kawai were already inside when we got there. I signed up and then sat down with my friends.
I cut some jokes that didn’t go well from the earlier set and riffed on some jokes from other comics sets. It went pretty well. We hung out after the show for a bit talking to people. Then Boon took us somewhere to get dinner.
This fish was really good, Toby ordered it because it had the text “Chef Recommended” next to it.
The fish were stored in plastic container outside of the toilet.
Toby wasn’t so happy about that. After seeing that we renamed the dish to “toilet fish”.
Thursday
Woke up a bit late and met Toby in the lobby of our apartment building. Then we went to a food court. I think I got chicken rice and Toby got chicken with plain broth noodles.
Javascript has made its way into point of sales terminals.
We went into this mall because it has a theme park inside it. Let me tell you, these Malaysian malls are incredibly annoying. They layout the escalators so you need to walk across the mall as much as possible. Nice for the tenants of the mall, but very annoying for customers.
We did some archery, rode the rollercoaster and some other rides. Then I went back home to have a nap while Toby and Kawai ate dinner. I got up from my nap and walked to KL Comedy Club for another open mic. I had a really good set. Afterwards I hung out and talked with the comics. Then I met Toby and Kawai at a bar and we spent the night drinking beers.
Friday
I woke up late, took a quick shower and met Boon, Toby and Kawai downstairs. We drove somewhere to get Bak Kut Teh. It was really good.
I didn’t actually get a picture of the food, but I did get a picture of Boss Man watching a grid of CCTVs. After that we went to a water park. This was a bit of a challenge for me since I was massively hung over. But we had a good time. I don’t have pictures from this because my phone was in a locker the whole time. Then we had dinner, got a massage and then went to a hawker center for more dinner. This hawker was amazing, Toby and I realised we should have spent more time at the hawker centers.
Then we went out again drinking beers late into the night.
Saturday
We went to a famous hawker center and ate lots of different stuff for lunch.
After that we went to a go karting track near the airport and did some rounds. Then I went to the airport and returned to Hong Kong.
